A modern, elegant Chardonnay from Ironcloud Estate, the 2020 Rock of Solitude is crafted entirely from a single estate vineyard. This wine showcases careful oak integration and refined textural complexity, reflecting the estate’s philosophy of balance and precision.
Tasting Notes:
The colour is bright straw with a pale green tinge. The nose is lively, with bright stone fruit, spiced floral notes, and subtle grapefruit. On the palate, citrus blossom, lime tartness, and delicate stone fruit combine with seamlessly integrated oak tannins and fresh acidity, culminating in a long, textural finish.
Winemaking:
The Chardonnay was hand-picked from the estate vineyard and includes a selection of four Burgundian Bernard clones (76, 95, 96, and 277), each contributing varying degrees of richness, structure, or finesse. The fruit was immediately whole-bunch pressed sequentially to oak with no additives. Fermentation proceeded through wild yeast, with batonnage being the only intervention during maturation. Barrels were carefully blended to achieve the wine’s distinct character.
Food Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with garlic butter roasted salmon, lightly grilled chicken, creamy seafood risottos, and dishes featuring mild spices. Its bright acidity and integrated oak also complement roasted vegetables and soft cheeses.
