The Lanzerac Pionier Pinotage pays tribute to the estate’s historic 1959 Pinotage, the first ever bottled Pinotage. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Jonkershoek Valley, where careful vineyard management and hand harvesting ensure only healthy, fully ripe fruit is used.
Tasting Notes:
Bright plum and cherry aromas dominate, with a complex and velvety palate. Layers of ripe fruit and subtle spice create depth, leading to a long, lingering finish.
Winemaking:
Fermented and vinified to emphasise balance and structure, with careful attention to preserving the varietal’s natural character. Oak ageing is used judiciously to integrate tannins and enhance texture, producing a polished, harmonious wine.
Food Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, game dishes, hearty stews, and mature cheeses.
ABV: 14%
Estate:
Lanzerac Wine Estate, established in 1692, is one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates and is famously recognised as the home of the first bottled Pinotage. Situated at the foot of the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch, the estate combines long-standing heritage with modern vineyard redevelopment. Under Cellar Master Wynand Lategan, who has overseen the Lanzerac range since 2005, continued vineyard renewal has focused on improving fruit quality and long-term sustainability.
